Continuing our Team Spotlight series, we ask Philipp Ruf, Head of Analytics & Research, about the key projects he has worked on at SparkChange and the challenges of his role.

Q1. What are some highlights from your professional career?

"From the early days of my career, I've been involved in building analytics products and teams to support companies in the process of decarbonisation and the energy transition. At my previous employer, I helped turned the company into the market leading analytics provider for carbon market analysis in Europe, North-America and Asia. During this process, I was able to accompany several political reforms of the EU ETS and was invited to speak at the European Parliament and European Commission as an expert on various stakeholder consultations.

Later on, I lead the expansion of the energy analytics business and started new products in the area of long-term power market forecasts supporting investment decisions as well as gas market analytics."

Q2. Why was SparkChange a match for you?

"SparkChange was a match as the company focusses on the key topic I care about: using market forces to tackle climate change. In my earlier career I mainly worked with companies with a natural position in carbon markets, such as compliance companies. SparkChange’s goal to make carbon markets more accessible to the financial community is, in my view, a key step to mature these markets and increase their importance."

Q3. What are the key challenges in your role?

"The key challenge in my role is to create new, value-delivering datasets in a nascent market with limited information. There is some basic transparency in most regulated carbon markets, but a lot of the key information is not public and hence, our job is a mixture of research, modelling and creating assumptions to mirror the reality.

The other key challenge is to educate the financial community about how carbon markets really work, what the important factors are to keep track of the risk and opportunities carbon markets pose to corporates."

Q4. What is the most significant project you’ve worked on and how has it impacted SparkChange?

"The biggest project I have worked on so far is the development of a model to estimate the effect regulated carbon markets have on the P&L of corporates. In order to do so, we had to build a model from scratch, find the right data sources, tackle incomplete data, make key assumptions and develop new methodologies to assess various factors in the overall calculation.

This development resulted in a new business line for SparkChange and aids our explanation of the effect of carbon markets to our clients. It puts a number on every corporate, and makes emissions cost a financial metric instead of an ESG metric."
