As part of our Team Spotlight series, we ask Marc Murphy, Junior Full Stack Developer, about life at a Fintech startup and how his role has evolved.

Why was SparkChange a match for you?

I was convinced SparkChange was the match for me the moment I met the team during the interviewing process. The products they were developing and the ethics behind them were the main factors why I applied but it wasn't until I met the people behind this disruptive company that I realised this was the place I wanted to be. These are all highly intelligent and down-to-earth individuals willing to work in collaboration toward something that can truly make an impact.

What are the key challenges in your role?

As a junior developer at a fast-moving company, it's important not only to focus on the task at hand but also to keep a clear grasp on the bigger picture and ultimate goal. An advantage to working at a smaller company means you get to understand the whole business process, which also comes with a steep learning curve which you wouldn't typically get at a big corporation. Even though it's a challenge, it's also a major benefit.

What is the most significant project you’ve worked on and how has it impacted SparkChange?

I worked on the development of the admin user interface, which allows us to visualise the data and manage the subscriptions involved in the products we offer. The dashboard provides a central application where we can observe what areas to improve on. This allows us to provide a better experience for our clients. It also serves as a visual representation of the application's data flows in a clear and concise manner. It's vital to SparkChange because it helps maintain the applications at an optimal level.

What has been your biggest achievement working at SparkChange?

Seeing a project's development from initial design to completion is definitely my most significant achievement. Typically, in large corporations, it is commonplace to work on individual 'parts' of a much bigger existing application. Since SparkChange is an agile company, I have now experienced what it's like to provide value from the very early stages of the development process. This also implies that I'm able to work on a wide range of tasks and learn how the other systems fit together.

What’s one thing that surprised you about your current role?

I was surprised about how relaxed the working environment is. There is no separation in how our team treats others - irrespective of how senior one may be. We're all on a level playing field because we're all working towards the same vision and goal. I haven't had any difficulty in seeking advice from senior employees. In fact, that type of interaction is actively encouraged as it helps to foster a really great learning environment. Had it been another company, I would hesitate to work in the office but at SparkChange, there is always a cheerful spirit going around. I now always look forward to office days.

How has your role evolved over time?

When I joined, I was given responsibilities from the very start. I initially set up a code repository for the admin user interface. I quickly learned how to be agile and integrate the different systems involved. This prepared me for the development of the latest product we were putting together. My role has evolved to be more dynamic, where I now work on a range of different products based on what needs to be prioritised.
